Many people take a receipt after a purchase and either stuff it in a pocket, or the nearest trash can. However, there are a few things that you can do with a receipt that can make you a little extra money.
I used to just crumple my receipts up, and throw them away. However, I have since learned that you can actually profit from those cluttering pieces of paper. I hang onto any receipt that I may have a need to return, and I keep those in my wallet. I try to clean that out every month or two.
But what are some things you should do with your receipts before making the decision to toss or keep them? The following post will give you some ideas of what to do with your receipts before you throw them away. These methods won’t make you rich, but it may be enough for an extra dinner out, or a few new saddle pads every year.
1. Look at the receipt – make sure you won’t want to return anything on the receipt. If you may need to return something make sure you keep it or keep track of receipts in an app on your smartphone. I have tried Shoeboxed and Forereceipt. I’d suggest either of them (both are free to download). I’ve also heard good things about Expensify.
2. Scan any applicable rebates in Ibotta – this is a great app that gives you cash back for things you buy at the grocery store (there are quite a few rebates for non-brand items as well, think produce, milk, bread etc).
Rebates are easy to redeem – simply download the app and sign up. You’ll need to select which rebates you are going to redeem by clicking on them. Then simply upload your receipt and get cash back!
3. Scan and receive any rebates that are available from SavingStar! They often have a produce item and free items occasionally as well! If I can find a coupon and a rebate discount, I will use both of them! Always worth getting a little extra money back after your purchases.
4. Scan your receipt using the ReceiptHog app. Receipt Hog won’t make you rich, but you can earn a little extra from scanning your receipts.
I’ve cashed out $70 since I started using Receipt Hog. It’s a quick and simple photo of a receipt that makes it easy to earn a cash out for gift cards or Paypal.
5. Scan your receipt with Yaarlo (sign up with my referral code CATHERIN195, and we both get a bonus!) Yaarlo is a receipt scanning app that you can add to your phone. It takes a few seconds to snap a photo before throwing out your receipt. Cash out for gift cards after scanning enough receipts!
Don’t forget to take advantage of these apps! They are simple things to do with your receipts but can make you some extra cash. Many small savings add up to huge savings throughout the year. The small things you do today can help you be more wealthy and comfortable in the future.
