Horse owners know that Spring is coming when their horse’s hair starts flying. You are going to need to use the best horse shedding tools to remove all that excess hair. It may not be actually warm yet, but with horse hair starting to coat your gloves and saddle pads, warmer weather is on it’s way. If you are going to tackle that horse hair situation, you will need the best horse shedding tools!
There are a large variety of horse shedding tools available. You may own some, or all of them already, but if not, it may be time to try some new grooming supplies.
Get ready for Spring, warmer weather and hair getting stuck in all the wrong places!
Sleekez Grooming tool
The SleekEZ is a newer product to the horse shedding tool scene – it is simple to use and really gets a lot of hair off the horse. The instructions indicate not pushing too much so as to break the hair off. This is also not a suitable tool for using on a horse’s legs or face – the blade is too harsh and could hurt your horse.
Strip Hair Gentle Groomer
I have written an in-depth review for the Strip Hair Gentle Groomer – I find it to be the most useful on a sensitive horse (my TB was the reason I purchased it). If your horse enjoys grooming and likes a shedding blade or stiff brush, then I don’t really think you need one of these. BUT if you have a thin skinned sensitive horse, this works great! It’s expensive for a piece of rubber, so I just wouldn’t buy it for every horse, but I do think certain horses really appreciate it and the gentleness of this shedding tool.
Metal Shedding Blade
A metal shedding blade is one of my all time favorite shedding tools. It may be old-school, but it works, and it is super satisfying to get huge chunks of wadded up hair off your horse using one of these. There are a two main styles of metal shedding blades: round or curved with a handle (as shown above).
Make sure you use a metal shedding blade on the fattier parts of your horse. These hurt over boney or sensitive areas.
Fine Rubber Curry Comb
The Oster Fine Rubber Curry Comb is the ideal tool to use on the sensitive areas of your horse – like their legs or face. These small rubber curry teeth are soft and gentle on all parts of the horse. You’ll probably want to have a comb on hand to clean out the teeth as they fill with hair.
Rubber Curry with Webbed Handle
This rubber curry is softer than the metal curry combs, but a bit stiffer than the fine curry comb before this. This curry is a great shedding tool for horses to get hair and dirt off. You can use it on your whole horse and the webbed handle makes it stay attached while you’re using it.
Hands On Grooming Gloves
The Hands On Grooming gloves are one of the best horse shedding tools. These are as easy as putting on a pair of gloves. The rubber curry nubs on the palms of these gloves lift hair and dirt off of your horse. My sensitive TB does not really like these – I think there are too many points on them, but my scratch-loving Warmblood loves these gloves! She says it makes scratchy fingers even better.
There you have it – the top 6 shedding tools for your horse! If you have these in your grooming box, you’ll be ready for Spring and getting coated in horse hair (don’t forget not to put on chapstick before you try these out on your horse)!

I really like the Hands On grooming gloves! They are so flexible and seem to have a softer feel for those more sensitive horses. Below is a link to a Hands On grooming glove photo I posted on my blog, The Backyard Horse Blog. Mine are about a year old at this point and are holding up just fine.

This is great! Thank you for showing all the different tools for hair removal. I wasn’t aware of a couple of them including the shedding gloves and the cool strip hair gentle groomer. That looks like a great tool to have to horse and dog hair! I’m always looking for new tools to use!

Thank you for your comment! My not sensitive horse LOVES those hands on gloves, and the sensitive TB says the gentle groomer is the best thing ever! The grooming gloves also work great for bathing a horse as you can curry easily and they dry out quickly.
